The Warsaw girls track team won the program’s eighth straight sectional championship Tuesday night.

WARSAW – The back of the team T-shirts for the Warsaw girls track program this season boasts the motto “Leave Nothing Behind.”

The Tigers, once again on Tuesday night, as has become a tradition left “Everyone Behind” in winning another sectional championship.

Senior star Ann Harvuot led the way as the hosts had the mosts to keep the hardware at home.

Warsaw piled up 156 points to easily win the program’s eighth straight sectional championship. Runner-up Elkhart Memorial scored 82 points.

The top four finishers in each event Tuesday night earn a spot back at Warsaw on May 27 for the regional, which the Tigers also won in 2013.

DSC_0138“Overall, I’m real happy with tonight,” said Warsaw coach Scott Erba, whose team advanced athletes to the regional in 13 of the 16 events. “The girls are getting better and better and things are coming along. It’s down to a two week season now and our big goal is State.

“With what we did tonight we have a lot of opportunities next week (at the regional back at Warsaw on Tuesday). It should be a fun regional.”

Harvuout made it quite the impressive run with her fourth straight sectional title in the 100 with a top time of 12.86. She also teamed with junior Mariah Harter and sophomores Samantha Alexander and Audrey Rich to win the 4 X 100 relay in a best effort of 49.38.

“Ann has been working on some mechanical things that we saw earlier in the season,” Erba noted. “She’s making progress.”

The Tigers had plenty of individuals shine on the track and in the field events Tuesday under beautiful conditions.

Junior Tennie Worrell won the 400 in 1:00.71.  It was the third straight sectional title in the event for Worrell. Rich won the 200 in 26.16 and freshman Allison Miller dominated the 3,200, winning in 11:32.52.

Senior Claire Hickerson was the star in the field events for the champions. The Warsaw senior cleared 10-6 to win the pole vault competition.

Warsaw showcased its superior depth everywhere too. Harter was third in the 100 (13.15), while sophomore Brooke Rhodes was third in the 1,600 (5:29.54) and junior Nicole Eckert was second in the 300 hurdles (46.58).

Freshman Anna Craig was second in the 800 (2:21.32) with sophomore teammate Hannah Dawson in third (2:24.91). Alexander was fourth in the 200 (26.67)  with sophomore Emma Hayward third in the 3,200 (12:03.08).

The Tigers also had two relay teams place second. The 4 X 800 team of seniors Madeline Hooks and Aletheia Burritt, along with Dawson and Miller clocked in at 9:52.67. The 4 X 400 team of Worrell, Eckert, Dawson and Rhodes was runner-up in 4:04.81.

Senior Courtney Farling was fourth in the long jump with a top performance of 15-0 3/4. Senior Brooklyn Harrison was second in the shot put with a throw of 36-0 1/4.

“We got two out in the 100, Tennie ran a season best in the 400 and our girls ran great in the 800,” remarked Erba. “We got Brooke out in the 1,600 and two in the 3,200 and Nicole had a PR in the 300 hurdles.

“Claire had her best vault in over a year tonight. Both Samantha and Courtney came through in the long jump for us.”

The only real disappointment for the Tigers was heartbreak for Jackie Ferguson. The stellar senior was second in the finals of the 100 hurdles before clipping the final hurdle and falling to the track and placing eighth. She then was fifth in the 300 hurdles and did not run in the 4 X 400 relay.

“In the short term, it’s a bummer,” said Erba of Ferguson’s misfortune in the 100 hurdles, where she was seeded second. “It’s a tough thing to have happen. That’s the second year in a row we’ve had something happen in the hurdles. Last year it was Rhodes in the trials. The silver lining can be if Jackie is healthy that she can run the 4 X 400 totally rested in the regional.”

Wawasee had plenty of things to build upon Tuesday night for the future. The youthful Warriors had a slew of strong performances from a team featuring a lot of sophomores and freshmen.

Wawasee didn’t have an automatic qualifier from the sectional, but junior Catherine Yankosky advanced in the 200-meter dash as a scratch pick-up after the meet ended Tuesday night. Yankosky’s time in the 27.51 in the 200 was good enough.

“We’re happy,” said Wawasee coach Scott Lancaster. “Everyone stepped up and we had a lot of personal bests and that’s what we were trying to do. You can’t fault the effort of all of our kids tonight.

“A lot of our kids competed well against the top tier competitors from teams like Warsaw and Fairfield. We’re focused on progress and wanted them to get this experience tonight. They should leave here tonight being motivated for next year to get to the regional.”

Junior Shelby Swartz placed fifth in the 100 hurdles in 17.61 for the Warriors. Senior Ruby Minnick was sixth in the long jump (14-8.25) and junior Hannah Winters was sixth in the discus (104-3). Sophomore Kaitlyn Kennedy was fifth in the shot put (34-1.50) and junior Taylor Busse sixth in the pole vault (8-6).

The 4 X 100 relay team of Yankosky, sophomore Sarah Lancaster and freshmen Skylar Janda and Leigh-Ann Shrack was fifth in 51.81. Yankosky was sixth in the 100-meter dash at 13.51.

“Our 4 X 100 had an enormous PR tonight,” Lancaster said. “Yankosky ran well in the 100 and 200. Winters had a PR by two feet in the discus. Those things stood out for us, as did Swartz in the hurdles.”

Concord sensational senior Jessica O’Connell won titles in both the 100 hurdles (15.61) and the 300 hurdles (45.06). Also winning titles were Elkhart Memorial junior Sierra Moore in the 1,600 (5:12.59) and 800 (2:18.80), Goshen junior Maria Corbett in the high jump (5-3), Jimtown sophomore Shawntel James in the long jump (16-8 3/4), Elkhart Central senior Jenai White in the discus (112-7) and Elkhart Memorial junior Deanna Cornelius in the shot put (40-5 1/4).

The Elkhart Memorial team of Sierra Moore, seniors Haley Lehman and Allison Hoefle and sophomore Hailey Moore won the 4 X 800 relay title in 9:43.94. The Concord team of O’Connell, junior Ciana Bonfiglio and sophomore Mariah DeFreese and Vanessa Steiner won the 4 X 400 title in 4:04.33.

Elkhart Central was third in the team standings with 68.5 points. Concord was fourth with 66.5, followed by Goshen 954), Fairfield (49.5), Northridge (45), Wawasee (31), Jimtown (27), Elkhart Christian Academy (23) and NorthWood (18.5).
